Here’s another last-ditch rescue solution for Microsoft XP and VISTA users. It’s a boot disk you can create that will load a small version of XP into RAM on your troubled PC. This ‘little XP’ application will bypass your operating system yet still give you access to all of the files on the box, allowing you to troubleshoot the file system, replace bad files and .dlls, run a version of McAfee VirusScan, and more. Very similar in functionality to the TRINITY Rescue Disk I reviewed earlier. This particular utility has a more user-friendly GUI (Graphical User Interface) that might be more comfortable for those who are intimidated or confused by command-line tools.
Bart Lagerweij and his pals have developed, actually, a variety of ‘toolkits’ that will be of interest to those folks who are not afraid to roll up their sleeves and dive into the twisted cybernetic minds of their PC’s. Check out the specifics at BART’S site – might come in handy, in anticipation of that nasty moment someday, when, at 4 AM, all of your image folders disappear! Don’t say you weren’t warned :-)
